"How can I ollie higher"? Is one of the most common questions any good skater gets asked. Here we attempt to answer this question.
There are five things that will help you ollie higher. The first thing to understand if you want to ollie high is you can only ollie as high as you can jump (the board doesnt push you up you push it up!). So measure your jump and there is your goal.
Second is your back foot postion is critical (look at all the high olliers). Have your back foot half on and half off the tail, this will give you more pop.
Third your front foot should be around the halfway point on your board, where you still have good balance.
Fourth if you were on the ground and you wanted to jump high you would bend your knees and perhaps even bounce a little beforehand (check out the last vid on this page the winner of the 44.5 inch ollie). If you were jumping high you would also pull your knees up into your chest, this is the same with ollying high.
Last if you are serious about ollying high practice your movement without a board say for a minute or two then get on your board. One guy I knew increased the height of his ollie by six inches in 30 minutes just from getting a flow happening.
Jake Eames is a guru when it comes to ollying check this vid out and in particular notice the position of his back foot. This back foot position along with his nice fluid action makes for a high ollie. Also take note of how he uses the term "Ninja Kick" and watch his front foot action mid flight (just like a ninja).
